The Issue: Oil Addiction

bar

THE ISSUE

America is addicted to oil for its energy and driving needs. With 5% of the world’s population, America accounts for 25% of the world’s oil usage. The nation spends more than $200,000 per minute on oil imports to keep up with demand. In 2007, the U.S. imported 3.6 billion barrels of crude. More than 53% of that oil came from OPEC. OPEC is a cartel of self-interested oil rich governments that, through collusion and market manipulation, control the global price of oil.

Members of OPEC include rogue states, as well as current and former state sponsors of terrorism. Iran, Libya, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia are all members of the cartel. These nations use their oil revenue to increase the value of their state-run sovereign wealth funds and other investment vehicles which purchase U.S. debt, realty and businesses. Sovereign wealth funds are vast pools of non-transparent capital operated as state investments.

For example, in 2008 Abu Dhabi is attempting to acquire $5 billion in acquisitions of North American assets with their sovereign wealth fund. Their most recent acquisition was the iconic Chrysler Building and General Motors building in New York City. They have spent $1.8 billion on American real estate as of July 2008.

America’s oil money is coming back in the form of foreign strategic investments to buy the country out (Click here to see the amount of companies sold to foreign interests since 1978). These foreign acquisitions funded by oil send all future wealth, jobs, patents and tax revenue abroad- and further reduce America’s ability to compete in global markets.

For a sustainable energy independent economic future, America must reduce its dependence on foreign oil and invest in creating, and fostering, innovation in domestic energy alternatives.

EIC POSITION

Our thirst for oil has increased our balance of trade deficit, swelled the coffers of the OPEC cartel and made America vulnerable to the political games of nations such as Venezuela, Iran and Saudi Arabia. These countries use this oil money to buy out American businesses, the nation’s best wealth producing asset. America must invest in an energy solution at home and free ourselves from this harmful addiction.”

WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

    • Tell the presidential candidates that America needs long-term energy solutions that free us from our one way dependence with OPEC.
    • Write a letter to your congressional representative and demand that the nation support domestic energy initiatives.
    • Join a discussion group via Meetup.com to find people in your area to talk about this and other issues with.
    • Help us raise the funds necessary to disperse this information through mass media outlets across the country.
