Three Burlington textile executives have joined forces with other U.S. manufacturers to lobby Congress and the presidential candidates to "stop job loss and boost competitiveness" in the global marketplace.

On Thursday, Jim Copland took his concerns to Washington and testified before the Investigation and Oversight Subcommittee of the House Committee on Science and Technology.

"When foreign governments subsidize, manipulate their currency, flout legal requirements and tacitly condone worker and environmental abuses, it's impossible for Copland or any domestic manufacturer to compete."

China accounts for half of the trade deficit, which he said has cost North Carolina 77,000 "good paying" manufacturing jobs.

The U.S. also is losing out on manufacturing innovations as a result of losing engineers and other skilled workers to other countries, Baugh said.

Ensuring fair trade is vital to the U.S. government and economy, Gant said during the conference. "Manufacturing jobs have been the base of every economy since time began. We want to make sure the political candidates today address the broad spectrum of issues" facing manufacturing.
