Wall Street gained on strong earnings figures this morning. One of the best performances was by Exxon Mobil, which posted a staggering 91 percent year-to-year jump in profits.

There are enough warning signs from sectors of the investment economy for analysts to worry. Unfortunately, if you only watch the overall composite trends you completely miss the underlying instability.

Wall Street has struggled with corporate earnings for most of the morning. Corporate gains from major firms and European banks were enough to push markets earlier today, but investors still seem wary of extending the rally.

BP has already failed on its promise to promptly fund all financial claims resulting from the spill. The oil giant spared no expense when it came to funding television and radio commercials and building a claims website.

Tuesday was a sad day for this country. The House had the opportunity to stop the war in Afghanistan in its tracks. Instead it voted to continue to fund the war approving the $58.8 billion war funding bill.
